UFC’s Fight For The Troops Gives Birth to New Era of Warrior Philanthropy

December 10th 2008, Dana White proved why he is the mastermind of the MMA world. Josh Koscheck, Mike Swick, Ben Saunders and other fighters in the MMA world came together to raise money for wounded soldiers. It was a powerful and authentically patriotic night for fighters and fans alike. This was an event beyond the politics of war that spoke to the philanthropic potential of MMA. Who would have thought that the same sport John McCain called human cockfighting would emerge to not only protect American soldiers, but help soldiers with traumatic brain injuries?

Every fight was fantastic. There was amazing action from every match I saw. I believe this was because the fighters were able to gain a measurable victory beyond themselves. They knew that fight was bigger than a mere win. There were NO LOSERS in that octagon on December 10th. These martial artists showed that they not only have skills, they have hearts. This is something anyone who knows a martial artist of any style already knows. Additionally, you saw stars close to the Hip-Hop community participate in the call to support. Most notably, 50 Cent, Everlast and Samuel Jackson.

I believe Dana White has given birth to a new era of warriors philanthropy, ushered in by Fight for the Troops. My eternal respect goes out to all the guys who fought that night, the soldiers who gave their all for this country and their families.
